Common Loon - Iconic symbol of Canada

The Provincial bird of Ontario is the Common Loon, (Gavia immer). The Common Loon or the Great Northern Diver as it is called in Eurasia, may be one of the most recognized and beloved birds of the Great White North. The unmistakable yodel of the male Loon can be heard on lakes across Canada and the northern United States.
Loons can be found Inhabiting lakes and rivers where there is a supply of small fish and crustaceans and where there is a suitable area for nesting. Loons will usually nest on small islands such as muskrat mounds that offer some protection from ground-based predators.
I am very fortunate to have a friend in David Homer. David is a Loon aficionado and is in the process of creating a coffee table book of the spectacular images that he has taken of Loons over the years. I have joined David on a few of his trips on Lake Dalrymple and have been able to get some of my own images which I hope you will enjoy.
