Snowy Owl - Kingston, ON

Another target species on my owl list was the very beautiful Short-eared Owl.  Even though the SEOW is one of the most widely distributed owls in the world, it has been listed as a species of special concern in Canada and nearly meets the criteria for Threatened Status.  It’s population has been in decline for the past 40 years.  This story in the Kingston Whig-Standard http://www.thewhig.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3121720 illustrates the dilemma faced when the need for clean energy competes with the breeding grounds of the Short-eared Owl.

To top off my tour, I was also treated to a variety of raptors including the very pretty American Kestrel.  I was especially pleased that one finally cooperated and I was able to get my best image of thus far.  This is one of those rare instances that I wish I had Photoshop and I could replace that industrial perch with a more natural looking branch!
